Ben Folds modern day’s cheekier version of Billy Joel. After have a very successful musical introduction with the self assured band Ben Folds Five, Folds made himself into a solo career, and subsequently released the highly acclaimed debut Rockin’ the Suburbs in 2001, for which is what he is most remembered for. He began life on September 12th 1966 in the somewhat restless town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, though he was known have moved a lot throughout his childhood due to his father’s occupational commitments. Folds and the piano quickly courted and he showed a neat appreciation for the instrument and its qualities. As well as the piano, he also is known to have (and still does) perform on the ‘three’; guitar, bass and drums, thus giving him the ability to solely record his solo albums. During his later high schooling, Folds and close friend Millar Powers formed the band Majosha – a local product the never made it large enough to attempt to put obtuse amounts of effort into. The band parted in 1989, and Folds eventually made it to Nashville, where he successfully caressed a few of the local acts (some of which were headed by past friends), to allow him in as a session musician. After a stint at university, and a brief theatrical period in New York, he moved back to North Carolina, and formed Ben Folds Five. Ben Folds Five despite its name had three members, with Folds as the main composer, fronting musician, vocalist and pianist. His time with the band became successful on the groups second outing which saw the well remembered track “Brick”. After the group split, Folds incorporated the success of his self-titled band, and coupled it with his cheek and clever approach to song writing. Many of his songs are quite light, witty and are nothing near to anything you’d see on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Having said this, he occasionally uses his love for past girlfriends, or even family members to create quintessential piano-rock tracks, such as “The Luckiest” from Rockin’ the Suburbs, as well as others. In 2005, he released the more commercially successful follow up to his debut. Songs for Silverman which digressed the cheerful Rockin’ the Suburbs, and moulded it into something which showed a more introspective side to the man. Three years later he once again came back into the limelight with a new and quite different recording which blended elements of many styles and variations, most of which haven’t seen the light on previous albums. « hide
