Over the last few months, I have gradually hacked into Quiet Steps' criminally underrated "Secular". At first, it flew past my musical radar, as it seems to have done with most others. But for fuck's sake, this record is to post-rock nowadays what "Yank Crime" was in '94. Why? Let me explain.rFirstly; the songs. "Secular" flows fluidly from start to finish, and the production is clean and full (the band would take a different approach on their next record "Dying Livers", but that's another story..). By the time 'Strike Three' comes galloping through your speakers, you'll realise this is no ordinary Australian art-rock effort; this is something entirely unique.rAt times I was reminded of the sheer personality and creativity exuded by 90's Australian bands like You Am I (on "Hourly Daily") and The Church (on "Priest=Aura"), but "Secular" equally conjured the sound of underground emo groups such as Faraquet, Fugazi & Sunny Day Real Estate. I don't know how the fuck they do it. Vox/guitarist Leon Perkin couldn't even tell me.rBottom line is, purchase this record. It'll be an alt/post-rock/emo/grunge/whatever cult extravaganza in 20 years time, and you'll have been there when it all started.
