There is a reason I've scrobbled this band over 500 times already. There is a reason people avoid me on the street when they see my headphones on. I know why weaklings that couldn't handle this record choose to have their group therapy sessions in broad daylight.
Not many people know about
Sea Of Shit which is a damn shame because these guys are actually pissed. THE WHOLE. FUCKIN. TIME. Usually when I see a band labeled as angry or pissed it's usually some mediocre local grindcore that takes cues from posers like Pig Destroyer and Gaza (gaza? grind? seriously?). This EP is different. It's a record I put on whenever I'm fuckin pissed - when I wake, when night is upon me, when I think of school, when school thinks of me, when I have to endure the presence of people whose guts I'd gently rape in the pale moonlight etc., you name it. This is the soundtrack to your hate, rage, sins. Anger accompanies us anywhere we go, so why should we suppress it? Why can't we just revel in our rage and let our heart, at least once, overwhelm our senses? Can't we just break free and cherish our emotions in their natural state?
Now I'm getting a little ahead of myself and that's bad because Sea Of Shit don't mess with that gay shit. What is maybe most satisfactory about this sweet lil EP is that it never settles into a comfortable groove. Unlike the more straightforward and thrashcorey bands like Infest or Capitalist Casualties, Sea of Shit constantly switches between various stop start riffs and tempos (think Lack of Interest or Crossed Out). One second you're assaulted by indistinguishable walls of noiz and the next one band goes sludgy and noizy and feedbacky (those of you who 5'd The Seer know what I'm talking about). Vocals work in a similar manner too. The main dude just barks incomprehensible stuff at the top of his shouty, gruff muffled pissed off ear-piercing voice (kinda like Weekend Nachos lite except Sea of Shit are consistently good) and we can only hope that the lyrics are about crushing midgets and brutal supremacy. His vocals are a vast improvement over the demo, where they sounded kinda weak and the way he sometimes hit those squeaky high notez made me lol, which really took away from the pissed off impression they were going for. This dude often trades the vox with the other dude who has a raspy low thin growl, and these two constantly trade off vox in unexpected patterns which compliments the instrumental part of the record. The production is the very definition of crush.The drumming is varied, it's not just constant blast beats, it breaks into a ton of different patterns rhytmhs and other stuff I can't spell. I don't think there's a bass player in the band (these guys are so obscure they don't even have a wikipedia page), and even if there was who the fuck pays attention to the bass on a hardcore record lol (I'm excluding trans-core ensembles such as Defeater from these statements). It all works perfectly, each song is tight yet wonderfully unpredictable, well produced but not Time I level, and it's just 7-8 minutes of constant pummeling and crushing. Get this if you're pissed, become one with the pissed. Become Sea of Shit.
