Review Summary: Trailing a rising sun.

Artists’ websites often have the tendency of turning up the hyperbole factor when it comes to detailing their parent performer’s musical history. Anchorsong’s (a.k.a. Masaaki Yoshida) is a case in point: the “About” section of his homepage proudly trumpets that he “has become globally recognized for his unique live shows”, which “many people have described as ‘like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas’”. By the time folks read that far they will already have opened additional tabs for SoundCloud on their internet browsers. There’s even a nifty statistic thrown in at the end for good measure: “He has garnered an international following on YouTube, with videos of his performances having been viewed more than 300,000 times so far,” quips the website in a deadpan tone.

While clearly whoever Anchorsong hired to write his background profile page for him hasn’t come within a thousand miles of Justin Bieber’s or Rebecca Black’s own YouTube stats, the Japanese performer does exude a certain wildcard quality that makes him a prospect worth looking out for. Originally from Tokyo, Anchorsong moved to London in late 2007 and has since fashioned a bit of a reputation for himself, having supported the likes of Prefuse 73, DJ Krush, Bonobo, Daedelus, Gonjasufi, and Jaga Jazzist on the European circuit. But while Anchorsong himself is best described as a groove alchemist of considerable eccentricity, his brand of music – a wild fusion of rock, hip hop, and electronica – is unexpectedly deliberate and heavy-handed. While this may have much to do with the fact that every note on The Lost and Found EP – from the sampled beats right through to the strings – is played by the Japanese performer himself, too often does it seem that Anchorsong is unable to utilize the negative spaces that he has created in his work, resulting in a form of auditory prose that rarely rises above the serviceable.

Take EP opener “New Bodies” for instance: while the song itself is sonically taut and driven forward by the sort of finely-crafted keyboard riff that one might expect to find on a Daft Punk outtake from the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, it is quickly enclosed by a heady sense of doggedness and eventually arrives at an all-too-logical conclusion with a rigid, perfunctory air. Second track “The Crossfire” doesn’t fare much better, with its series of disparate shimmers failing to dovetail completely with the metronomic string arrangements heaving and falling in the background. While Anchorsong’s ability to create dense and tightly woven samples is smeared all over the nuts and bolts of this track, there is no sense of occasion to be felt at all, just the humdrum rise and fall of a synthetic sequence going through its paces. Elsewhere, other cuts, like the awkwardly-placed “Prelude” – a blithe forty-seven second piano doodle that is unfathomably placed near the very end of the EP – or the mind-numbingly rudimentary “Into the Frame”, offer precious little in the way of substance or insight into Anchorsong’s songwriting process, making their very inclusion on this EP a questionable artistic decision.

But even if it urgently lacks the sort of creative spark that is often required to catapult a debut effort into widespread international recognition, The Lost and Found EP isn’t patently bad by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, it hints at the possibility of greater things to come from this Japanese performer and, when viewed through that particular prism, deserves to be taken as a promise without commitment. It’s just unfortunate that this time around, Anchorsong’s output is as two dimensional as the metaphorical white canvas that his website purports him to freestyle with.

So, Irving is also interested in electronic music? I would like to see you reviewing something that you actually like. Listening to this as we speak, and your appreciation seems correct.

I've been increasingly trying to give electronic music a go, and yes, I hope I find something that I like too! All of the new stuff I've been listening to lately is - honestly - quite meh.

EDIT: lol 69 reviews. GROSS IRVING.

That's exactly how I roll ;)

Mmm...that is not good. Based on what do you make your choices? I would hate to see you discouraged by some unfortunate random selections.

Thanks Ty!

And well Zettel to be honest my sampling is done on a random basis. For example, in the case of this release I just found Anchorsong's name on next week's new releases list and decided to check out his debut EP...I daresay that I won't be checking out his LP though, unfortunately. This was okay, but I'd like to listen to more, well, interesting works (with all due respect to Anchorsong).

Would you have any 2011 recs for me? I'm admittedly quite desperate/eager to pad my 2011 Best Of list =)

Emika - Emika (female vox with dubstepy sub-bass, so cool)
Roman Flugel - Fatty Folders
Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder

Zomby - Dedication
Submotion Orchestra - Finest Hour

Sorrow - Existence (EP)
fLako - The Mesektet
Andy Stott - Passed Me By
FaltyDL - You Stand Uncertain

random electrobabble I've enjoyed from 2011. I know you won't check out everything on that list (I end up checking out like 25% or less when someone leaves me a big rec list) but definitely check out Stendeck and BNJMN

Second track “The Crossfire” doesn’t fare much better either

It could be just my take on this, but I think having 'much' and 'either' is a little redundant and the sentence would probably sound better omitting 'either'. Like I said, could be just me.

is smeared all over the nuts
hehehe you sly bastard Irv

Awesome review, awesome-r closing sentence. Well done buddy.

"This was okay, but I'd like to listen to more, well, interesting works (with all due respect to Anchorsong)."

Ouch- Anchorsong not happy ;-)

Well, Aids's list is very good, but it is very intimidating. I have heard some of those, and I second Stendeck new one. But I would like to know what album/artist made you interested in electronic music. Do you look for something in particular, or are you exploring different angles?

a.) if you want some in-your-face music try Dom & Roland new album The Big Bang LP. Very energetic and fun drum 'n bass-

b.)- if you want something more playful and groovy, try the new Wagon Christ Toomorrow. Music for a sunny day.

c.) Want something melodic, midtempo and well-crafted IDM? Try Plaid's Scintilli

d.) Want some great 2011 techno? Xhin's Sword will do the job.

e.) Want a taste of great hard dubstep? Hecq's Avenger is both sonically interesting and fun.

f.) Wanna try some electro-acoustic electronic music? Try Field Rotation's Acoustic Tales. Gorgeous. I am finishing a review for this one.

This is a very small selection, but all are good albums for tasting the waters. If you are looking for something else, let me know.

I've made a few changes to the review since the last time I commented here; I took your opinion into consideration iFght, and elected to make the change you suggested - thanks a lot! Also, I am particularly happy that you took the time to read the entire review. Feels good to be read =) (ok that sounds wrong haha)

@ Zettel and Aids: Hot damn that's a lot of recs lol. Of Aids' list, I've heard and enjoyed both of James Blake and Submotion Orchestra, while Swarms was a bit meh. Of Zettel's I've actually tried none (haha). I'll whittle both lists down to a couple of choice cuts and will them a go if I can find the time. I've only got eighteen days to improve my "Best of 2011" list - but damn that's a LOT of unlistened-to-as-of-yet music lol! It makes me feel so small - there's just so much out there =S

My recs were not supposed to make to a "2011 Best-of"; they were only to help you through some different styles, and help you find something to be of your interest. It is unlikely you will find an electronic record to make your list in that short time. I agree, there's SO MUCH out there to even attempt it, especially when you are not feeling this kind of music. Sooner or later you will find something that clicks with you, and hopefully there will be no going back ;-)
