Review Summary: A surprisingly good 90s thrash band.
Crionic is a thrash metal band from the Czech Republic - a country not known for its thrash (actually, this is probably the only thrash metal band from Czechoslovakia that I've heard of) who first began playing in the late 80s. Like most thrash bands who released albums in the 90s - with the obvious exception of Pantera - they were doomed to obscurity.
Different is the one of the most unique thrash metal albums I've heard. It is technical, but rarely very heavy. There is a great deal of melody to the songs, and some times the music actually more resembles rock than thrash metal. The sound varies from song to song - sometimes fast-paced, sometimes aggressive, sometimes sinister, sometimes peaceful.
The drumming is average for thrash, but the guitar players (there are two as far as I know) are quite skilled. The vocalist sounds a lot like Venom's vocalist, and he does not have a particularly wide range. However, his vocals are effective for the music and the guitars make up for any shortcomings from the other band members anyways.
Not much can be said about this album; it is one you just have to listen to. The songs on Different really are different; it is not that they are different in a specific way but that there is some uniqueness in the execution of the album. A great thrash metal album that most thrash fans will enjoy.
