| 4.0 excellent | deftdrummer | June 7th 12 | Hailing out of Wellington New Zealand Of Blackest Oceans is the latest melodic hardcore band to actually
rewrite what it is to thrive in the metal genre. Dueling melodic guitars shred throughout this album with a
complexity within reach of the casual listener. Song structures are the most ear catching aspect of Vultures,
where intertwining guitar melodies hook the listener and take them in unknown directions. The brutally
abrasive Confrontation is a harbinger of all things metal; infusing pounding double time drum riffs with
penultimate breakdowns. Vocalist Dylan Sweetensen's naturally raw and aggressive vocals provide a powerful
lead and provides an excellent contrast tonally with bassist Kane Ross's backup shrieks. Further aiding
Sweetensen's vocals is extensive use of highs and lows. Vulture's overall recording quality may be a bit muddy
for some hi-fi enthusiasts, but there is no shortage of intensely emotional vocals and ultra heavy
polyrhythmic drum breakdowns to keep any metal fan interested. Of Blackest Oceans latest single Siberia - to
be released on their upcoming sophomore release shows that the band is evolving with their writing structure
and use of tones. A stellar album from the other end of the earth not to be missed.

| 3.5 great | IAmKickass | August 16th 11 | Metal is a rare genre to be found right anymore, it's all been caught up in the "core" and crammed into one little box of all that is generic. Of Blackest Oceans can be considered more metal than anything, but they keep the modern sounds and elements intact, which means there are breakdowns. All in all though, the instrumentals here are absolutely well done, brought forth well by the members. It's easy to lose it's touch though, and after a few listens ends up running dry a little quickly.
