Review Summary: I'm drifting... closer to you.

Serianna are one of those bands that were unfortunate enough to release their expertly crafted debut album of unashamed August Burns Red worship about 2 years after that band had redefined the game. The weak timing I think resulted in this album flying right under most people’s radar which is a shame, because while there isn’t a single original thought conveyed on this entire release, every derivative idea is honed and polished to a mirror sheen and arranged with razor precision.

Serianna tries to distinguish themselves from their superior counterpart by invoking -wait for it- clean vocals, with highly varied levels of success. Chris Nutting delivers competent and stoic (if generic) harsh vocals throughout, but his clean vocal style is completely different, straying to the melodramatic side ala Davey Havoc circa Sing The Sorrow. He really runs the gamut of spine-tingling and awful on a regular basis and since the songs (thankfully) do not follow verse/chorus structures, his hooks never repeat themselves for better or worse; when they flop it’s a bit cringey like during the plaintive bridge of Virtues, but when they hit on tracks like the devastating The Rescue, the results are dynamic and sublime.

Chris Ferraro keeps the whole ship anchored with his ridiculously driving beats that simply dare you not to head-bang and get into it, and he really gives this record an infectious amount of energy. Since the songs are structured mostly as riff-salads, this allows Serianna to alternate between melodic harmonies, bludgeoning breakdowns and big sing-a-longs with ease, and that’s what this band excels at. Other album highlights include Deep Sleeper which I’m convinced is just a missing track from the August Burns Red album Constellations, as well as the short-but-sweet Redeemer which pleasantly implodes upon itself at the very end.

All in all, if you’re still reading you probably already know if Serianna’s Inheritors will be an album you’ll like. It’s a shallow album yet it scratches a very deep metalcore itch, and sometimes that’s all it takes to get you through the day. If you’re interested, check out the song The Rescue and tell me you don’t wet your pants a little when Chris bellows ‘Fear not, I was sent to save you’.

The production/mix of this album didn't help with replay value for me. Agreed on the review.

The production is fine on this. Glad you seemed to enjoy it otherwise.

good lord, my band opened for these guys many years ago. One of the dudes in the band was literally straightening his hair for 20 minutes before they went on. Why we got lumped in with these guys? I don't know but man it was embarrassing to be mentioned in the same sentence as these guys. I remember watching them play their first song, I cringed, and had to just go outside

this band had ABR level musicianship so either you're thinking of a different band or you're just, well, dumb.

cmon, man. It was this band, they played with "This Romantic Tragedy" and they were equally as egregious. Dark times when metalcore likes this was even remotely acceptable

And August Burns Red is not a good bar to judge good musicianship on. Sure they can play guitars well and get out of traditional 4/4, but being technically proficient on an instrument does not necessarily equal quality songs or musicianship.

You don't have to like ABR, my point was simply that this band has chops and cool songwriting without verse-chorus structure. They're talented, so why would you feel embarrassed for playing with them? Just because the singer was flamboyant? You sound like a douche, if these guys were hacks I would understand your dig. There's some sweet riffs and transitions on this album but whatever. Can I hear your band so I can see how much better you are?

If you think i disliked them based on the singer's "flamboyancy", then you're missing what I'm saying. It's just mind numbing, run of the mill, generic "metalcore" scene/pop/boyband manufactured music. I honestly thought all support for this music died in 2012 or so. The promoter put us on the show for no reason at all. We are an Alternative rock/dream pop band. It just made zero sense for any of the artists on the bill. But back in 2013, local music was in a very strange state. The promoter didnt understand genres and we were too young to say no at the time. The guy was so far in debt and he thought by booking genreic metalcore like this, it would bring people in. It didn't because by then, this fad had died out. So he went bankrupt and mercifully metalcore in our area went away for good. It was just funny to remember this time, look up the band, and see they were on sput. Equally hilarious is their music video for "exist to outlive" features the insanely overused metalcore trope of being chased through the woods. Honestly i cant count how many scene and metalcore bands have done that. It's just ridiculous.

I used to listen to this a lot back when it came out. Now I can barely muster the urge to hear anything from this other than the title track and Colors.
