Execute the Sinner is a Technical Deathcore band from Quebec, compromised of members from Despised Icon and Ion Dissonance. Threnody is their 2nd EP following their self titled EP from back in 2009 and it is amazing. The guitarist Aime is constantly playing technical riffs that rival almost any other band in the genre. The guitar work is not unlike math metal band Into the Moat. The drummer Philippe fills the atmosphere with chaotic blast beats and erratic china fills. The vocals are nothing you haven't heard before in a deathcore band, but this doesn't make them bad. They fit the music quite well and they don't sound over produced. Vocalist Jean-Michel has a good range and he switches between demonic growls, hellish mids, and the occasional high. The lyrics are not on the web and the vocalist isn't very easy to understand so I cannot comment on them.
The bassist Nick can be heard accenting the guitarist perfectly throughout the entire album, but he doesn't really make himself stand out.
Threnody starts us off with The Imprint and this is one of the best songs on the EP in my opinion. It starts out with a prime example of the excellent guitar work I mentioned earlier and ends with a haunting outro where the vocalist can be heard screaming "why" over and over in different ranges. The next song "Threnody" is a perfect way to sum up the whole album into one song, it starts off slow and haunting where an eerie piano can be heard playing in the background. The song then picks up and guides you along to an absolutely fantastic breakdown that ends the song.
If you're not a fan of breakdowns then you should stay away, but if you're like me and you're simply tired of the same old breakdown then Execute the Sinner has your back. Their breakdowns are far from generic and they usually add some sort of element to leave a smile on your face. The rest of the album is deathcore at its finest and even though there may not be anything worth noting there isn't a single song on the EP that I disliked or felt that served as a filler.
To sum it all up Execute the Sinner is an excellent band that deserves your attention and Threnody is an EP that really knows how to deliver. If the band could add a second guitarist and make the bassist stand out a bit more then they could really make waves.
