Review Summary: "Me, I'm a sick MC"
Jentina's only album was a complete failure. Although the lead two singles charted relatively well, her record company did not trust the album to be properly released. Inexplicably, it was officially released only in Italy and
Jentina, for all intent and purposes, became a curious anecdote in her career (she is now a model).The record’s fate shows the huge importance of marketing and perception. It was derivative, featured mediocre singing/rapping and the production values were standard, and yet it was not worse than your average pop record. But if people do not know about it, it does not matter.
Jentina is better than expected, if merely for the fact that it lacks any pretention and presents itself as what it is: a disposable work. It never tries hard, and aside for a couple songs, the album is not memorable. But that is
exactly what you would expect from this kind of music, and
Jentina delivers. It is funny, catchy and easy to the ears. It does not want to surprise you, and would rather have you dancing and whistling than to give the slightest trouble. The girl cannot sing or rap, but has a terrific time trying to do so; certainly it is a charming effort. The mix of pop and hip hop with tints of electronics is not the smartest, but it is consistently good and effective. With proper marketing,
Jentina could have been a moderate success, and certainly it deserved more.
Despite the low rating, there is little risk in giving it a try if you want to hear something light and upbeat that is not overplayed everywhere. Maybe that is the reason I have been playing this album regularly for more than a year: I only hear it when I play it. And yes, it is fun.
