Review Summary: Soi Disant have managed to craft an impressive three song EP that showcases the chops of each member of the band. If Pretty Mess is any indication, this band has a bright future ahead of them.
"Diamond noose around my neck," shouts singer, Ian Louda, in the blistering opener "Psychedelic Audio". The simple-but-effective riff of the song will surely have you bobbing your head within seconds. The chorus features an assault of heavy guitars interweaving over each other as Louda sings, "So long/now I'm gone." Perhaps the highlight of the song is the chaotic yet controlled doubled guitar solo by guitarists Charlie Hickey and Alex Aguilera.
The next track is the spacey "Venus Lipstick", which is Louda's best vocal performance on the record. The verses feature a strong tremolo on the guitars, which distracts from the song a little bit. However, the chorus explodes as Louda belts, "To be dead/dead again," while the rest of the band plays a solid backing track. The chorus alone is enough to send chills down your spine. Drummer, Andrew McCarty, sounds off at the end of the song with a drum solo reminicent of drumming greats such as Keith Moon and John Bonham.
The final number is the acoustic based "Sunday" which sounds like it could be a
Pearl Jam outtake. This is without a doubt the most upbeat song on the EP, as Louda sings, "People tell me all you need is time/I say be quiet/life has fooled me way too many times." It's hard to get the infectious chorus out of your head after hearing it just once. The song could be a surefire radio hit if given the right attention.
In the end, Soi Disant showcases an EP with amazing diversity and range. Each of the band members leave a good first impression with their superb chops and effective songwriting. It would've been nice if the EP contained a few more songs, but hopefully a full album is in the works. This is truly a band that should be discovered by fans of rock music.
