Review Summary: Just as delicious as it sounds.
The emo genre and splits seem to go hand in hand. With the coupling of the upbeat, summery melodies of Castevet and the purely hypnotic and soothing voice of Evan Thomas Weiss, Castevet and Into It. Over It. have created an EP that should strike a chord with fans of the genre.
Opening with "Chilsen," Castevet display their ability to engulf the listener in every single element of their music. With absolutely gorgeous sounding guitar harmonies by both the lead and rhythm guitarists being backed by a warming bass line, the band eventually leads up to a section of toe-tapping rhythms that would not be uncomfortable in a My Heart To Joy song. The following track, "(Get) Bucktown," is entirely consumed by the more upbeat and infectious musicianship presented in the second half of "Chilsen" but with their vocalist's raw, almost punk rock sounding raspy singing. These two tracks could very well be the playlist for a listener's entire summer.
The second half of the split consists of two completely different songs by singer/songwriter Evan Weiss, the man behind Into It. Over It.. With his first track being as cheerful as what Castevet presented in the first half, it is definitely not a change of pace and should keep the listener's attention as long as they were interested in Castevet's half. Weiss's main difference from his contemporaries is shown in his final song, "Pontiac, MI" which shows how Weiss can just change to a slower and sadder sounding atmosphere which works completely in his favor. Evan's soft crooning over a looping guitar creates a feeling of closure, which ends the split perfectly.
Like most splits, the problem with Snack Town is its extremely short duration, but by no means does it take away from the enjoyment found throughout the four tracks. Snack Town is just as delicious as it sounds and should have the listener replaying this on their summer drives to the beach.
