Review Summary: A breath of fresh air for Metalcore/Post-Hardcore.
Horizons is a Metalcore/Post-Hardcore band from Mississauga, Ontario. The band is made up of five members, Chris handles the screams, Cameron pounds the drums, Borys slaps some bass, Doug and Ben play guitar, Ben also does the clean vox for the band. They got together in late 2009 and released their debut EP, Its All Worth Reaching For, on March 22, 2011.
The members of Horizons really do know how to play their instruments, and they show that off on this EP. The guitars sound clean and have their moments to shine and quite a few tracks. They like to run all around the fretboard alot, but not in a progressive metal type way. The drums arent too impressive yet still good. He follows the guitar perfectly and adds some nice little fills every now and again to keep things interesting. The bass is hardly audible, which is upsetting but, we're all used to that, right?
The vocals and lyrics are okay. Nothing special, nothing horrible. Chris has a nice scream, but can get abit boring at times, since he doesnt have that much of a range. His scream leans more on the high side yet is very throaty. A good change from all the mid/low screams that have been surrfacing recently. Ben has a high pitched singing voice that works with the band. The lyrics are'nt your common relationship problems, which is a breath of fresh air. For example, this is from the song 'While I Breathe', "Its time to be faithful to your heart, and follow the dreams, you've wanted from the start." they have a good positive message and positive vibe to them.
Now, they do have breakdowns, but these breakdowns aren't trying to be the heaviest thing you've ever heard. Horizons, aren't trying to be the heaviest thing you've ever heard. They are far from it and should be proud of that. This EP is greatly produced which is always a plus.
Horizons have alot going for them, now one can only hope a label is smart enough to pick them up before it is too late.
