If you have ever played Need For Speed Underground, you'll know that the game had a pretty awesome list of good-to-drive-to songs, with The Crystal Method, Rob Zombie, Overseer and BT all giving good contributions. Among others, Jerk's "Sucked In" from said game specifically stood out to me because it was a catchy as fuck, industrial tinged nu metal bomb. So, since I am a sucker for good nu metal (and good driving tunes), it is no surprise I took the time and looked up Jerk's debut, and only, album, When Pure is Defiled. When I had given it a listen, it turned out to be pretty much the way I expected it to be: simple downtuned guitars, Manson-, Ventana-, Pitchschifter-esque industrial overtones and, of course, a decent dose of angst thrown into the mix. The angst here is actually even comical at times, with golden lines such as "No one's gonna save my life when I'm drowning/ No one's gonna give a fuck when I die/ All my friends try to tell me I'm the greatest and all my friends try to tell me but my friends all lie!/", or the supreme "Piss on piss, kiss on kiss, it's a simple math". Jerk's Manson-like nu metal/industrial rock hybrid works very well as driving music and when you just want to kick back and have a few beers with your friends. It also has surprisngly solid replay value despite being as simple as it is catchy.
