Unearth are undoubtedly one of the better bands to emerge from the rapidly growing metalcore scene (otherwise known as the 'New Wave Of American Heavy Metal'. Unlike bands in the same genre, Unearth utilise 7-string guitars and the the onslaught of brutal noise is quite intense. The album consists of 11 tracks and in my opinion each and every one is a good one. So, enough with the introduction; here is the review.

Track 1: The Great Dividers

This is a brilliant opening track and a typical Unearth song. Heavy throughout with great riffs and breakdowns. Trevor Phipps is a pretty damn good singer (or growler for want of a better term). The drums and bass also impress after just one listen I was captivated by this band. 5/5

Track 2: Failure

This track pretty starts where the previous one left off. After a flashy intro courtesy of the guitarists, the track continues on the more melodic road throughout and some of the leads are quite marvellous. Again, another heavy breakdown ensues (typical of this genre) with the track ending with an epic outro. 4/5

Track 3: This Lying World

I loved the intro to this song. It is one of the more brutal songs of the record and thunders along at juggernaut pace before transforming into technical guitar riffs and guttural vocals. I particularly like the lyrics on this song. 4/5

Track 4: Black Hearts Now Reign

Probably one of the more recognisable songs off 'The Oncoming Storm' and it is a damn fine one. The blistering solos are what really sets this track alight. Again, the drums and bass also impress. Nice outro to leading into the following track. 5/5

Track 5: Zombie Autopilot

This is definitely my favourite track off the album simply because the guitars are so bloody good. Every riff in this song is catchy and memorable and the solo is to die for. I also like Phipps' singing on this track. 5/5

Track 6: Bloodlust Of The Human Condition

This is probably my least favourite track off the album as it just has not got the same quality as the other songs featured. It is not a particularly bad song but definitely an average one. 3/5

Track 7: Lie To Purify

Lie To Purify is another solid track off the album and epitomizes what Unearth is all about; heavy riffs, brutal breakdowns and nifty lead work.
Pretty good vocals too. 4/5

Track 8: Endless

Another solid song which includes all of the elements of a typical Unearth offering. The track loses it's pace after a pretty decent intro unfortunately. 3/5

Track 9: Aries

Aries is a standout track off 'The Oncoming Storm' because it is a completely different type of offering. Pianos, soft guitars and distant vocals make up the song and overall it isn't too bad a listen. 4/5

Track 10: Predetermines Sky

After nine tracks I was expecting the album to finally let up but this track proved me completely wrong. As heavy as any on the album and as good too, this is a very good track. 4/5

Track 11: False Idols

I am not a huge fan of this track but it isn't that awful as a closing track. One of the faster tracks on the album before it's meaty breakdown; the double bass drum pedal sounds awesome. 3.5/5

Well, there you go. I hope you found this review helpful. Overall I would recommend this album to anyone who likes their metal brutal yet melodic. I kid you not; Unearth, alongside Trivium, are the forerunners of this genre.

Unearth sucks. That's all that I really have to say about them.

A.) Elimator Jr. is a dumbass.

B.) Unearth is awesome. Ok review. I think the songs need more detail about them, because if someone had never heard anything by them, I'm not sure the descriptions you have would help much. A for effort though. Just try adding a bit more detail next time, eh?

All these metalcorebands sound the same. I will have to agree with Eliminator JR on this one.

So do all the Ska bands, and most of the modern Punk bands. And to me, honestly, most of heavy metal bands do too. So whats the big deal?

I don't like the singers voice that much, but generally Unearth is a decent band. I do prefer other bands within the genre though. 3.5/5 from meThis Message Edited On 08.19.05

The vocals are horrid, but the rest is quite good. One of the better metalcore bands out there.

I really, really enjoyed this album from the second I popped it in and heard the roar at the beginning of the opening track. I think that "Black Hearts Now Reign" is far underrated, as is "False Idols."

They are excellent, yes.

The Black Dahlia Murder is way heavier, and intense though. Between the buried and Me is also really sharp stuff.

I really like this album. The Black Dahlia Murder is melodic death metal but a great band none the less. Unearth is worthy of being mentioned with a lot of great bands.

Prophecy, The Black Dahlia Murder is NOT melodic death.

In flames, Dark tranquillity, Children of bodom

They are melodic death.
