Well, the phrase term EP should be used loosely here, as it is not quite what one would see as an "extended play," but rather, just one song. Fortunately, that one song packs a serious punch, and is well worth a listen, and then some."On My Shield" starts off with a very sludgy, and very heavy, intro. The production is pitch perfect as usual, cortices of Kurt Ballou. Everything is wonderfully accented with a few simple, yet effective, guitar parts. This leads up to Jacob Bannon (and some incredible drumming) entering in at about the minute and a half mark. From there, in typical Converge fashion, the song picks up greatly, both in speed and overall intensity. Bannon screams, Ben Koller kills it, and Newton and Ballou keep things tightly paced until we're back into a slower pace at about the 2:50 mark. The intensity is still there, but at a slightly slower tempo. About 3:25 into it, Koller takes over the limelight, while Bannon cleanly sings, "All of our pain is worth it - together we fall apart." r"On My Shield" is a perfect display of the band. Quite literally, this single song encompasses the band and their sound wonderfully. Each member is in primo display, and it's almost as if the entire history of the band's is in this one song. However, the major downside is it's brevity. Although touted as an EP, it really is only one song. A great song mind you, but it just leaves the listener wanting more. So all in all, it wasn't quite fulfilling. That mild complaint aside, fans need to here this. It's classic Converge, enough said.
