Release Date: 1996 | Tracklist

Review Summary: Another win for '90s neo-soul

Tasteful. That's the word that springs to mind when considering the unique blend of elements on “Peace Beyond Passion.” Another album with this many connecting pieces might feel jumbled, as if ambivalent about its own technique or message. A less familiar listener could reasonably feel this way, at least. Fortunately, such is not the case here. Jumping between quiet storm, hip-hop, funk, motown, and jazz fusion, the album maintains a strong r&b ethos throughout its runtime, tugging the heartstrings at just the right moments, and bobbing the head at others. With varied instrumentation and deliberate songwriting, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and co. crafted a masterpiece that easily stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its peers, but is not as well-known. Let's fix that, shall we?

His mother would pray, "Save him. Save him. Save him from this life" ...One of my favorite funk/soul albums from the '90s. It sounds as great now as it did then.
