Review Summary: Scientifically simple but brilliant.

Neige is the biggest whore in black metal.

The French blackgazer is best known for Alcest and (mistakenly) associated with La Sale Famine and Peste Noire. He's also a part of Amesoeurs and has now usurped vocal duties for Lantlos.

While the bastard’s pulling Jack White-level musical prostitution, Herbst, the man behind all the instrumentation for Lantlos, does the real chemistry.

.neon takes riffs reminiscent of everything from Hammock-style soaring post-rock, to cool jazz, to pop- and arena-rock, drops some blast beats behind it, and smears Neige’s distinctive wails across the top. Fill with tremolo picking and that’s it, that’s the formula. And fortune prick me if it doesn’t work wonders. “Neige de Mars” sounds like kvlt Mono. .neon is 6 tracks and just short of 40 minutes, but tracks like “Pulse/Surreal”, with its chill intro and smooth clean vocals (speaking of Toby Driver…) proves the record’s overall solidity. It’s not as folky krieg as Peste Noire, not as gothic as Amesoeurs, and not as light or melodic as Alcest, but Herbst may be the one to finally perfect the post-rock/black metal smoothie (and a perfect perch to keep Neige's talents and ego in balance).

I wasn't really a fan of this band's S/T so should I even bother with this?

^YES you should. The S/T didn't have Neige, hence the whole "throne he usurped" thing.

The actual concept behind the album is interesting, though since his English isn't so great, it's a bit difficult to get a great detailed idea...but it's still a beautiful one. If you liked the harsher moments on the latest Alcest, it's pretty much more of that - though with some jazzy interludes and a bit more of a calming feel. Really enjoyable album though.

It's not as bleak sounding as the previous album. Far more uplifting/atmospheric...though both are great albums.

@Infernis: yeah, I was surprised by how the post-rock elements made a black metal album (depressing by its very nature) into something very beautiful.

whoever wrote this review has no clue about neige, he IS NOT IN PESTE NOIRE.

edit: neige was in peste noire for the demo stages. neige is not on the first peste noire album. neige wrote one song on the second peste noire album. neige was not on the third peste noire album.

peste noire is famine. peste noire has always been famine. famine uses session musicians. he writes the music. it is his outlet. it is fundamentally famine and is not neige.

edit x2: as a longtime maudlin of the Well fan, to me, maudlin of the Well is far from Toby Driver. Greg Massi and Jason Byron were definitely my favorite members, by far. Byron's growl was amazing and Baliset's guitar playing defined the band. Toby Driver... eh... maudlin was WAY better than Kayo Dot.
