It took a few listens for it to creep up on me, but this is a really beautiful album. Maria has a haunting singing voice - airy yet resounding; delicate, yet subtly smoldering. The songs here have many different instrumental quirks - plinks and plonks, occasional wafts of distortion - but Maria's voice always finds a place among them, providing a solid through-line that ties together what mightve otherwise felt disparate. Their lyrics are poetic and wise, and their melodies range from memorable to, in the case of tracks like 'Rare,' 'Night and day,' and 'Miami,' just painfully beautiful. The album is still held back a little by its overall rather languorous pace and a few abrupt endings that suggest more couldve been fleshed out, but its a lovely, creative, and cleansing singer-songwriter album thats sure to satisfy when youre in more of a downcast mood.
