| 3.5 great | zaruyache | September 30th 25 | Ochre & Ash is unfortunately not a stylistic sequel to Avifauna but more an extension of the ideas begun on The Hunt. While Avifauna was mostly cascadian black metal with frequent acoustic folk breaks, Ochre & Ashe returns to much rawer and simplistic black metal counterpointed by doomy droning guitar sections. While definitely not as slow as The Hunt, there's still a whole lot more droning doomy black metal than was really needed. It's hypnotic and trance-inducing, though, which was clearly the intent of the passages so it's at least successful there. Not a bad record and definitely a substantial step up from The Hunt, but it still could've been so much better as a proper black metal record if the droning sections had been trimmed some.
