Review Summary: The insanity continues for Trha!
Here we are again. Another monstrous release from Damian Ojeda. A man amongst boys in the modern black metal scene, if you will. His crazy output is something that this genre has never seen before. In 2025 alone, between 2 of his bands, Trha and Life, he has put out a jaw-dropping 13 releases. Nobody has ever been so prolific, to be quite honest. It’s not just the insane amount of releases, but also the top-notch quality of every single one.
lact'eben is the latest in the 2025 series and it may very well be the best thing he has put out in his career so far.
The best thing about this album is the blend of influences from all of his projects. It is undeniably a Trha release, but it’s not just the typical lo-fi meloblack anymore. We have a lot of screamo influences that is a first for Trha in particular. The atmosphere is warm and fuzzy courtesy of all the epic tremolo picked chords and the overall upbeat vibe of the entire record. Don’t get me wrong, this still contains the rawness and chaotic black metal bitterness fans are accustomed to, but it isn’t as melancholic as usual.
Damian must be in a good spot in his life because the entire atmosphere of the album is sunny and bright sounding. The cheerfulness is evident in the undoubtedly catchy, melodic riffage. It’s the perfect companion for going on a brisk walk at dawn through a dimly lit forest, with dew still painting the grass and leaves. The hazy atmosphere will make you appreciate the nature that you come across with every step.
Mentioning nature, this is the most natural the band has ever sounded. Nothing is forced and it feels like the riffs are flowing over you like clouds floating in the bright blue sky. It doesn’t sound lo-fi just for the sake of being “trve”. The vocals are an extension of the riffs, as each raspy shriek echoes through the reverb as if a deceased loved one is calling out to you from Heaven itself. It almost feels as if
lact'eben is the calling card for all of the animals in the forest. Whispering to them in a language only Damian can convey.
To me, this is probably Trha’s greatest achievement thus far. He takes elements from all of his projects and melds them so perfectly together like a fine wine. With the amount of music that he releases, you’d think he would get burnt out at some point in time, but his stuff is only getting stronger and more mature. Damian is a treasure in this current black metal scene and fans should appreciate his hard work, dedication, and most importantly, the consistency he provides time after time.
