Vocals falling in and out of gratingness aside, Basia can craft a sweet tune, endearing even, heartbroken (if not heartbreaking, as what she appears to go for). She also cleverly builds and rewards tension built up over time in songs with subtlemost crescendos, seemingly knowing full well the limitations of her own voice, letting the tasteful arrangements take the lead sometimes.
