Review Summary: A 3.5 kind of band!
I’m gonna review this on the fly. Yeah!
Immediately I’m laughing because the singer hasn’t improved or evolved his vocals in literally ever. It’s all for the pirate boss shtick of course.
“Steal your treasure, we’ll spend it all on rum”.
— still rum obsessed, good.
Now for the track by track lols
1. Hyperion Omniriff
Great opening track, bringing a triumphant chorus like they’ve always been good at. This track really brings the old school (first two albums) feels. Rightfully the first track and a bold statement.
2. Killed to Death by Piracy
Clearly inspired by the old MK movie, the verse brings that cheesy synth energy. The chorus also brings the cheese. This is a cheesy song with a good rhythm and a playful energy.
3. Banana
A 8bit dubstep breakdown starts the song, and the lyrics are pretty funny. Also brings some lovely violin in that sea shanty way.
“Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1699” - awwwww yeah
4. Frozen Piss 2
This song is pure ***ery from the lyrics, to the random punk beat, to the unnecessary guitar solos, to the super dinky dink keytar string splashes, to the random blast beat, to the inclusion of a random guest vocalist that starts singing outta nowhere and then vanishes. Pure Alestorm chaos.
5. The Storm
Filler song. Boring verse. Average riff. Skip this one.
6. Mountains of the Deep
This is that new era Alestorm sound. Tight, clean, and occasionally boring.
7. A Nekrogoblikon cover.
Of all bands to cover I’m glad it was Nekrogoblikon. The song is good of course. Nekrogoblikon is a good band and Alestorm is funny and Nekrogoblikon is pretty funny so it works.
8. Mega-Supreme Treasure of the Eternal Thunderfist
Lots of ways to make this song title shorter. The song itself is also long AF, and is 17 minutes long. If you like Alestorm getting in their instrumental wankery bag, here’s a lot of instruments. If you’re a fan of this band, even YOU might still groan at the length of this song. Goddayum.
In conclusion, it’s an Alestorm album with power metal inspiration, loads of synths, growls, and some fun rhythms. Alestorm just doing their thing like usual, but somehow this album got a wee bit tiring.
