Review Summary: The best of modern deathcore.
Bone Crown is one of the standout modern deathcore bands making some noise right now. They blend in a ton of nu metalcore vibes, which I'm totally into. The trap metal rhythm keeps things fresh and engaging. Plus, those pitch-shifted panic chords really enhance the whole experience. I’m all about deathcore that feels grand and epic; I want it to sound massive. Those ambient lead guitars on top of the frenetic riffing really adds a lot to the haunting alluring atmosphere.
I also appreciate how coherent the song structures are. Even with all the double bass action from the drums, the songs feel tight and well put together, which is something I miss from those classic 2000s deathcore records. A lot of that coherency comes from the nu metalcore influence, always layering some melody over the riffs to tie it all together. Take, "The Order," for instance—the riffs hit you like a barrage of alien sounds, nonstop chaos, but somehow it always circles back to a catchy melodic theme that sticks with you. The EP really prioritizes groove, which is awesome. I have mixed feelings about deathcore that leans heavily on blast beats. Some bands pull it off, but others just don’t do it for me. I’m really happy to see that modern deathcore is focusing more on groove.
I really dig that mix of high-pitched, harsh screams paired with those intense nu metalcore riffs. It creates this wild, chaotic sound that I can’t get enough of. I think I lean towards the high shrieks instead of low gutturals in deathcore because it’s easier to pick out the melodies in those high screams. Plus, it gives me this awesome feeling like a goblin lord taking charge of the mic with those fierce vocals. The crazy riffs just crank up that madness I love. And of course, the breakdowns hit hard, which is a thing deathcore has always acceled at, even in the early stuff I don't care much for.
The "Ritual Slaughter EP" takes me back to the mid-2010s when bands like Lorna Shore were really making a splash. It’s exciting to stumble upon these hidden gems that not many people know about. This is the latest trend in deathcore—super polished, intense, and unapologetic, with a massive overcompressed sound that I love. I’m all about that ear-splitting volume, and this delivers just right, plus it has those nu metalcore vibes that have been really grabbing my attention lately.
