HISTORY
This is a death-metal band which is a bit unique if you compare it to other death-metal bands. From being a religion hating band to a alien obsessed band,
Hypocrisy is the name of this band. With a frontman known for his multiple side-projects like
Bloodbath,
Lock Up,
Pain among others and as world-wide known producer in the metal industry.
Peter Tagtgren a man with many irons in his fire started this band back in 1990 after is visit to Amercia where he was heavy inspired by the Florida death-metal bands like
Morbid Angel and
Death to mention some of them. From satanic themes to alien themes, this band has made a big career and they are still on the move. With ten studio albums, several EP's, one compilation album and one live-compilation in their baggage
Hypocrisy is still on the road.
ALBUM INFORMATION
Inferior Devoties is the name of this EP, and guess who made this?
Hypocrisy of course, this is a longer EP from the Swedish death-metal band. This EP conatins five tracks and one of them is a
Slayer cover, this EP is focused on the obscure and satanic themes that the band was concentrated on in the beginning at their career. The vocals are deep growls most of the time but
Peter delivers a few screams here and there. Some of the songs are also included in
''Penetralia'' and
''Osculum Obscenum'' and some of the songs only appear in this EP.
THE CREW
The crew who made this EP is not so hard to figure out, it was the trio who recorded this and the members are
Peter Tagtgren as guitarist and vocalist,
Mikael Hedlund as bass player and
Lars Szoke as former drummer. Their performances in this EP is very good, there are lots of old-school death-metal ingredients in the songs. And becuase of
Peter's influences from the Florida death-metal movement with bands like
Death,
Deicide and
Morbid Angel the songs has been given a very raw and brutal sound. The vocals are very deep growls, sometimes some harsh shreiking, muted and half-dense speaking and a few screams is included in the material. The guitars are very heavy, raw and brutal in the sound, the rhythm sections are thick and steady, the riffage has a good variety with both catchy and sometimes not catchy. The shredding is fast and quite repetitive at some moments but it is very enjoying to listen at. The guitar solos are pretty good, they are though a bit chaotic and played in disorder but there are also some melodic elements mixed among them too. The bass might not be as powerful as the guitars but the bass does a good job to thicken up the rhythms, there might be a few bass filler sections in some of the songs but otherwise there are no standout performances from the bass. The drum patterns are similar to the
Morbid Angel sound, fast mahine-gun pounding mixed with slower and heavier beats, the drums have a pretty good variety in them too.
MY POSITIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS EP
This was a pretty good EP in my opinion, maybe not my favorite
Hypocrisy sound but I still liked a bit. Some things I enjoyed was the deep growls, the growling almost sounds like some kind of demonic hell creature. I just admire singers who can do these types of singing. The variety of the songs was pretty good, most of them sounded quite similar to each other but some songs were catchier than others. A song I really liked was the
Slayer cover called
Black Magic, it starts with an up-building shredd guitar and later plays some evil thrash riffs. It later turns into a small thrash-attack but it really sounds like death-metal material with
Peter's demonic growling, the song gets a bit slower but it gets very catchy and heavy. The overall sound was also good, the brutal and heavy sound displays the most darkest side of the band compared to their latest albums. The amount of songs was good, I think that five songs is a good number for an EP.
MY NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS EP
One part of me likes the more brutal stuff from
Hypocisy while the other part of me likes the ''newer'' sound. I must say that the newer sound attracts me more than their more obscure and brutal material. There was some things I liked but there was not many songs here that I like personally, the songs that grabbed my attention was the
Slayer cover and
Mental Emotions, most because of the catchy song patterns are the variety if the guitar work.
MY CONCLUSION
Not my favorite
Hypocrisy EP but it was pretty good, with a cover from another great band along with some of their own heavy hitters made this EP to a good one. But I didn't like it to 100%, I liked the EP but not so much of the songs but if you like anything of their work you should check this out. This EP might not be a good
Hypocrisy experience for those who wants to know more about this band, I would recommend
''The Final Capter'',
''Virus'' or their self-titled album
''Hypocrisy'' if you are looking for some real stuff if you know what I mean.
This album didn't contained material that I really like so this one will get a 3/5
