Review Summary: Blackgazin’ through the telescope

A Pathway to the Moon, Unreqvited’s sixth full-length, feels like a total leveling-up for the Canadian one man act. As always, the album presents a cinematic sound perhaps best described as the “mellowest music possible while still being tangentially black metal”, but this time around not only are the highlights stratospheric (“The Starforger”, among others, oooh baby), but the release manages to maintain its high standards of quality throughout. The results are absolutely delightful.

While this record is notably well-produced, the underlying music is remarkable as well for its beauty, relying heavily on shoegaze and ambient stylings. The bulk of the runtime consists of grandly blissful soundscapes reflecting the outer space themes of the album, while still convincingly incorporating metallic elements, whether it’s the pounding blackened sections or more techy influences. Clean vocals (quite successfully deployed) are preeminent, but the periodic screams against heavenly backdrops sound incredible. As a whole, though, it’s important to set any expectations of a so-called “metal” release aside at the door, though. You’re more likely to envision angels shedding tears at the sheer gorgeousness of this music than demons delighting over their helpless victims.

The record does meander, but this languid approach represents part of its charm, and the tracklist construction feels far more coherent than some of the artist’s previous uneven efforts. As a whole, A Pathway to the Moon does summon up the irresistible feeling of an interstellar voyage, and blends sensations of light and dark in a way which feels revelatory. I haven’t found a more rewarding new release to start this still young year.

I'm probably overrating this, but man has it rewarded repeat listens for me.

I've always liked this guy's music, but tended to find his previous releases quite inconsistent in quality (2021's Beautiful Ghosts marking a notable step up, and apparently a stepping stone towards this gem).

Anyway, if you like spacey stuff that's slightly metal but not too much, look no further.

Yeah loved this from the first listen, though the latter half needed to click a bit. It's a gorgeous album.

The Antimatter has some very Dimmu Borgir melodies in the orchestral parts. I dig them

Nice succinct review Sunny. I like parts of this, but as a whole it might not really be my thing, but I certainly see its appeal.

Yeah I've been listening to this a bit the last week at someone else's recommendation and it's lovely. Haven't heard anything from this artist before but it's also apparently his first record with lyrics and clean vocals both, in place of just having wordless harsh wailing before, so that's pretty interesting. Not sure how interested i am in combig through the back catalogue but this is gonna get some mileage for sure.

Think this is the best since Mosaic 2, and I agree with the reviewer that this album sounds like a leveling up. Ghosts was good, but didn't grip me as much as Mosaic 2. This is as good as M2, maybe better, too soon to tell. I'm captivated by the artistry in weaving the enveloping beauty with the harsher and heavier passages. That's hard to get just right.

@kevbogz, honestly, my opinion of a lot of his past work isn't far off from yours, but this one surprised me a lot.

Interesting review and plenty of interesting comments too. Been a fairly big fan of atmoblack stuff that isn't focused on evil stuff -> Violet Cold, Midnight Odyssey, Elderwind, Alcest and a few other bands. I sure hope this is on YouTube.

I really like this album, but I have to be in a certain mood for it. Preferably in the evening on my deck under the stars with a bottle of wine.

Man, I really wanted to like this album, but I feel like I've heard it done before.
