Review Summary: Whips butts?
The debut from Strange House shows differing tones in each track, mostly in part from the varied guitar work. The first track has a more gentle, plucky acoustic sound with a strong jazz influence in the rhythm. It’s a lush, gentle track with a funky bass part to break up the slow feel and a section that speeds up, only to end with a crunchy guitar. It showcases the instrumental band’s diversity handily. Dream Rotation, the second track, attempts to get a bit more math-y, or at least in your face. There’s a memorably chaotic riff that the bass corresponds with, clearly showing a band wanting to show off their instrumental abilities. The drummer stays entirely consistent in both tracks, with an almost robotic precision. The fast and hard fills in Dream Rotation are quite impressive. In both tracks, the bass also has an unforgettable tone, and is audible in a big way. The final track is Euphoric Recall, and it enters with a post-rock guitar wash melodic tone. There’s certainly an emphasis on the melody of this track, attempting to fill all empty space with extra guitar reverb. The track explodes into a catchy chorus, which this little EP definitely needed, and it comes at the right time.
And there you have it. There isn’t much beyond guitar, drums, and groovy drums in this debut, and that’s quite alright. It’s an interesting nugget of music that endorses a tiny bit of sizzle that won’t burn you. It’s a little candle but it’ll produce a nice ambience in wherever they attempt to play live. Even better, the music features a Sputnikmusic user, so you know that equals an instant hit. Check it out and aid your fellow man.
