Review Summary: Speed. Lots of speed.
The world of black metal is a vast and diverse one. When it comes to pushing creative boundaries, experimentation, and the general span of approach, there are few genres that surpass it. But while many try to reinvent the sonic wheel, some bands prefer to relish and stylize the echo of their inspirators. So which path has Wormwitch chosen? Well, from the moment you press play on their self-titled LP, the answer becomes abundantly clear. While limited in innovation, Vancouver's Wormitch deliver a blistering black metal experience that will impress many metalheads and music-lovers alike.
If there's one thing this record gets right, it's identity. There's never any doubt you're listening to a traditional black metal album, even through the lovely acoustic reprieves of tracks like "Inner War" and "Salamander". The members play with such vigor and purpose that it's virtually impossible to resist being captivated. If the first minute of "Bright and Poisonous" doesn't have you scowling, headbanging, and looking to start a circle pit, then this album likely isn't for you. Blasts, vocal snarls, and infectious tremolos abound, this record throttles you and refuses to let go. Punk influence is also scattered throughout, adding tons of fun and bounce among the dissonant chords. Insofar as a band playing to their strengths, Wormitch leaves it all on the table, absolutely and unapologetically.
The production also lays the perfect bed for this record to sleep in. The kick and snare are punchy and the bass tone is gritty, emphasized heavily in the outro of "Godmaegen" for example. The guitar tone also boasts enough lo-fi crunch to drive the songs forward, while not overwhelming the rest of the mix. With just enough meaty details to discern the parts, and just enough rawness to respect the traditional black metal sound, every element is superbly balanced.
In all, Wormitch's self-titled offering is a wonderful 41 minutes of savage black metal fun. Although playing to a tried and true formula, if the band wanted to be fast and catchy they certainly delivered. This is a great record and well-worth your time!
