An immersion-breaking record that shines both when you cherry-pick individual tracks and listen to it as a whole. An experience that makes you take a step back, re-analyze what you are hearing and then ask questions such as 'what the fuck is this music, and why is it so catchy while being so technical, abrasive, chaotic and absurd, and have I heard something like this before?'. It is hard to answer these questions but rather it is best to just sit back and be immersed in something that conjures up images of being speedrun through the movie AKIRA but for some reason everything is good and happy? Favorite moments are KID FRESINO's verse over whatever-the-fuck is going on musically there (sounds like imploding drums and synth on a broken CD skipping), the lush happy vibes of 'Mouth Flash', and the truly beautiful composition of 'Boy's Texture' which is an easy contender for SOTY. The best avant-garde art makes you question things, this is a triumph in that regard. A dream.

A gloubiboulga of many cool things without any kind of filter, cohesion, or coherence whatsoever. That's kind of a shame because the jazzy pop exuberance underneath the constant aggression feels cool - but you can't really access it.

Hakushi Hasegawa debut album in 2019 was my first showing of what they had to offer with some blistering and rhythmic styles of avant-pop, jazz fusion, and breakcore. On their newest album ?Mah?gakk?? Hakushi Hasegawa somehow turns the dial up even more than before with the breakcore/speedcore elements being so fast that it has turned into a noisy and glitchy style of avant-pop. In some ways this blistering speed can be immense and beautiful. But in other ways I feel like the ideas don?t go well together. Take the second song ?Gone? with Japanese rapper Kid Fresino. His rapping is almost swallowed by the swelling drums and synths. Or take the sixth track, which has such a blistering speed that the vocals can be inaudible. Overall ?Mah?gakk?? is boundary pushing and a feat of musical composition. But it also feels like it doesn?t come together all that well.
