Black Dresses continues on in 2024 with their longest LP yet. This group has been fun to watch evolve since their excellent debut EP dropped but I must admit LAUGHINGFISH is a bit of a mixed bag. A lot of the tracks are pretty low energy and that makes the runtime feel even longer than it is. Dizzy and Rook still have great back and forth on the vocals and the backing tracks are still intricate and very well textured but this feels like more of a collection of random tracks than a coherent project. Favoite moments are the oscillations in CAT CUP between heavy distorted industrial bass and chill synths, the "I wish you saw me" part of GOOD THINGS HAPPEN, the backtracks in THE WORLD, and the textured bass of CHAMPION IN DECAY. ROTATION is also another highlight track showing how good they can be when things get a bit more experimental.
