| 3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | September 1st 24 | Dark Times delivers good beats, soulful elements and nice production but retains a very chill, almost timid mood for most of th e record leaving the listener waiting for a signature moment or track. While Vince's previous projects have had a lot of varying moods and energy levels, you don't get that here. The beats are rich but it feels like Vince is just coasting for much of the runtime. Favorite moments are the title track (steady hard beat, choir vocal accents and rich keys), the bass, energy and chorus of Etouffe, the ending of Nothing Matters and all of Little Homies.

| 3.4 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 25th 24 | As expected with the album cover and name, this is Staples at his darkest. It makes for a gripping record whose beats sometimes only partially leverage the storytelling.

| 4.0 excellent | BillyBrill | July 24th 24 | How the fuck is this shit on a 3.5 rn. This is rap album of the year can you guys not just fucking appreciate a tight, conceptual album? This is dark and super deep texturally. Fantastic album dude just great. What am I missing that makes it a 3.5?!

| 4.5 superb | ItamarZ13 | July 1st 24 | Very cohesive in quality, effective and full (but
not over the top) production with lots of taste,
vital performance from Vince.. sounding more alive
than past two releases.. reinvigorated and inspired,
even though lyrical themes are pretty dark, as the
album title suggests. Lyrics are captivating without
trying to be hardcore, which is fitting for this
point of his life. You get to take a peek into one
of the most interesting artists' life, without
condescension and at eye level. To me this is a huge
triumph, especially when he could have been putting
all his energy just for the VS show. If he layed
down the pen after that one I wouldn't have anything
to complain about. Rare classic

| 4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | May 31st 24 | I, and probably many others, have been patiently waiting not only for a new Vince Staples album, but for Vince to return to his previous form he has shown in the past. 2017?s ?Big Fish Theory? really showed that Vince can have some lyrical substance with booming wonky production from Sophie. However, from then his latest albums have all had various flaws from being substance less to sonically boring. However, on ?Dark Times? we see Vince really shine through with his style of abstract hip hop he has been trying to do. Some really subtle and light production, that works so well over the nasally rapping delivery from Vince. ?Dark Times? is definitely a strong vibe from front to back and anyone that is a fan of modern abstract hip hop should give.
