Im torn. This album obviously illuminates completely horrifying truths about the recovery and fallout from the slave trade, especially in Britain and the topic deserves far more widespread attention. The execution just doesnt come across for me though, at all. The repetitive vocals and lower voice modulating and some of the more sinister ambience feels like textbook avant garde, if such a thing exists. The execution just feels cliche and meandering at times. Especially on the long songs. Death by longitude is my favourite song and even that suffers from the same criticisms: who builds death like this is an incredible concept to peel apart, but instead its layered and repeated over and over at different pitches. A good album which Im very grateful to be educated by, but as a musical expression I truly believe it leaves a lot to be desired. Probably 6.5/10, definitely still an album worth hearing.

The Great Bailout channels Matana Roberts' Coin Coin series with haunting jazz poetry seeing avant stuff (here, mostly electroacoustic with occasional forays into noisy and ambient territories) dictate the soundscape. A leftfield sonic experience that mostly left me cold.

The newest album from one of the greatest names in the underground hip hop scene is both intriguing and somewhat superficial. moor mother's music has traversed various genres, from experimental, industrial, and abstract hip hop to side projects in jazz and even noise rock. However, on "The Great Bailout," she delves into an electroacoustic direction with undertones of experimental hip hop and poetry. While everything seems like it should coalesce, nothing quite comes together as expected. I find enjoyment in the listening experience, but it tends to fade from memory once it's over. Additionally, the two 9-minute tracks on the album feel overly lengthy without offering sufficiently interesting ideas to sustain their duration.
