Review Summary: Sounds from another dimension...

There's always certain bands that you find completely by chance. One day you may be scrolling this site, or a different site, and you may stumble upon something you never would have thought to listen to and end up loving whatever artist you just discovered. I was searching Bandcamp's ambient section the other day and came across this release. I had never heard of Faded Cloak before and the album cover intrigued me. I still know nothing about this project, but what I do know is that this particular album, Wrapped in Fog and Freezing Mist is everything I love about ambient music.

Faded Cloak is mostly rooted in ambient that's on the verge of straight-up drone, but there's also some subtle techno vibes in the way the synths are arranged that give you the feeling of wandering some dark and dingy alley after being drugged in a nightclub. Doesn't sound appealing? I don't think Faded Cloak were trying to appeal to Swifties while making this album. The feeling of imminent doom waiting around the corner is constantly present with the drawn out synths flying in and out of the static. Like you're floating in an evil vortex in space that you have no hope of ever escaping. There's even some classical piano thrown in here and there and it is glorious alongside the almost extraterrestrial effect illuminating from the synths.

Ambient music is a genre with lots of different styles. If you're looking for upbeat, warm and inviting stuff, you're gonna want to stay away from Wrapped in Fog and Freezing Mist. This is way on the darker side of the ambient spectrum and would be far more suited for a lonely midnight walk in the woods or if you want to drop a bunch of acid and trip out to some intense and vast soundscapes that feel as if they're coming directly from a UFO. When I personally listen to ambient, this is exactly how I want it. Claustropobic, eerie and downright scary at times with tons of twists and turns to keep things varied. With this album, that's exactly what you get.
