Review Summary: Lil’ Kim

So has Kim Gordon released a trap album here? The answer is not really, more a trap influenced album, but I’d go as far as saying that ‘The Collective’ doesn’t even qualify as a hip hop album. While experimental/abstract hip hop like Dälek or Injury Reserve are handy references a lot of this sound is closer to noise collage and more general arty ambience.

The near spoken word delivery occasionally gets rhythmic enough to approach rap but then again I’m still more reminded of Tricky in those moments than conventional MCs, and the rest of the time the mannered spoken vocals land in Laurie Anderson sort of territory.

The important thing is the album is daring however it’s defined and is sprinkled with these engaging flashes of creativity that carry the listener through what often feels like a maze of loose structures; it can be hard to always find a foothold.

My issue with ‘The Collective’ is in terms of longevity of appeal; what is going to make me think listening to this is what I want to do a year down the line? Are any of these tracks ‘mixtape playlist champions’? Possibly the more direct material like ‘I’m a Man’? I’m not convinced, this still feels like an art gallery exhibition - novel at the time, but do you need to return?

The album currently hits hard, but you're right, I also wondered how I would feel about it in few months. But "No Home Record" stayed with me over the years, so...

Thanks Dad, mkm and Flag

Very difficult album to rate and I look at each of your three ratings and go '.....yes, I think they've got it right'!

I only downgraded this to a 3.5 from a 4 today but I had to be honest, if this one wasn't my 'focused listen' new album of the week I think it might have fallen out of rotation a day earlier. Yet, I respect this album so much :/

I had a bad first listen with this and was ready to bury it but by listen three I had to admit I liked it quite a lot…but by listen seven I was back down to thinking more ‘interesting’ than something I’ll ever reach for again

So the big question is does Kim Gordon get a hip hop sput tag now?

Also: oh no this glorified soundoff hit the main page
