Review Summary: Songs filled with such intense emotion, the album is likely to ignite a feeling of euphoria in anyone who listens to it.
There are some reviews that almost feel like a chore to write, yet have to be done because I have opinions so strong for the album. Foxy Shazam's self titled album is one of those albums.
The band went into their 2010 release known as a fun band that blends almost every genre into one, creating a sound that could only be categorized as "Foxy Shazam." Though very original, it seemed their sound was missing something. Whatever that "something" was, they certainly found it their third time around.
Right from the intro you know that vocalist Eric Nally has not lost even an ounce of the soul he has always been known for in fact, it seems even stronger this time. "Bombs Away" is a flat out, rocking song. We hear the inclusion of a trumpet right from the get go and the quickly played keyboards, pulled off perfectly as usual. The drum beats are just crammed packed full of energy and the song is more than enough to get your foot tapping or even your head banging. Tracks like "Wanna Be Angel" and "Unstoppable" just seem so sincere that its hard not to get into them.
"Count Me Out" is one of the many standouts from the album as the words are spat out with passion as the song tells many stories of love gone wrong. The chorus and echoing guitars will no doubt, force the listener to feel something whether they want to or not.
It's been said many times before that "I don't need drugs to get high, all I need is music." Never have I found such a perfect example, no matter what mood i'm in there is no doubt that blasting a few songs off this album will instantly ignite that euphoria I crave.
I actually had some trouble getting all the way through the album, not because it bored me but because just a few songs take so much out of the listener. Much like the first time I heard Brand New's "Daisy."
Other booming anthems like "Oh Lord" and "With An Axe" are sure to get the entire crowd singing at a live show, whether they know the words or not. (The chorus's aren't that hard to figure out)
Filled with almost every genre imaginable, Foxy Shazam is surely going to inspire the listener to pump their fist in the air and put a smile on their face. The majority of the album is definable as "pop" music but don't let that turn you off, give this album a try.
