2.0 poor | ajcollins15 | October 5th 23 | The avant-garde jazz composer comes through with her newest addition to the long-running ?Coin Coin? projects. It continues the spiritual poetry reading and avant-garde jazz passages that Matana has been known for up to this point. However, unlike past releases, this album feels disjointed and unbalanced. There are many times when a song barely develops and just ends abruptly going into a new song. Other times tracks go on for far too long with no end in sight. It?s just a mess to sit through and enjoy, especially by the end where I am beyond the avant-garde and free jazz noodling that plagues many tracks here.

3.6 great | Erwann S. STAFF | October 2nd 23 | This fifth installment of the Coin Coin series shows Roberts can dial down in the experimentation while balancing more efficiently the spoken word bits with electronic shenanigans and other free jazzy stuff. This one felt coherent and not annoying, which wasn't the case for their last two records (imo). Chapter Five is powerful, at times poignant, and its free spirit doesn't hinder said the brutal honesty it displays. Gens de couleurs libres still numero uno in my heart.
