it's not bad but the metal moments either feel shoehorned into the primarily ethereal darkwave songs, or just kinda pleasant-but-nothing-more on the primarily metal tracks. The metal moments feel more like an obligation to the original folk/metal shtick of the project moreso than a real natural, logical songwriting direction. Either the two halves should be better workshopped together, or focused on each individually.

As someone who really enjoyed M. and all of Myrkur's releases quite a lot, 'Spine' lands as a good album but one that feels stuck between worlds. This is not to say that the folk and the black metal sides of Myrkur can't mesh but here they feel like they haven't been blended fully but pulsed a few times and laid out in an album that lacks a natural progression. 'Mothlike' and 'Valkyriernes Sang' are the standout tracks, where everything balances out nicely but a lot around those just feels like filler.

One of the ugliest artwork of the year... [*disgruntled noises*]
The album itself is actually pretty nice, however I think some songs are kinda like "fillers" to give it a longer runtime (e.g. "My Blood Is Gold"). It's a bit shame to admit: two of the already released singles were the pinnacles of the album ("Like Humans", and especially "Valkyriernes Sang") - but sadly, even these are not flawless...damn, why was it good to ruin certain parts with those loud and lame blast beats?! However, songs like "Blazing Sky" and "Devil in the Detail" are pretty convincing and really catchy. In the end, one thing is sure though: I still love her voice.
