5.0 classic | reaper239 | March 24th 10 | The Horse is an amazing creature. I first got into Neon Horse when I was looking to get into 70's and 80's style music I listened to Cuckoo and a couple of other songs like Horsey and Little Lamb off of their self titled album and was intrigued. After a few listen throughs I fell in love with their strange sound and waited eagerly for their next album. Well here it is: Haunted Horse: Songs of Love, Defiance and Delusion.
As soon as the album opens you immediately know who your listening to as the first few seconds sound very reminiscent of Cuckoo, the album opener from their last album, but after that it's a totally different album. Now make no mistake this is still Neon Horse, the sound is very much unchanged, they still have that 80's rock and pop sound, but the quality is vastly different. The instruments are tighter and there is more variety of instruments (from horns in Chain Gang Bang Bang to an organ in Follow the Man to the synth showing up in just about everything) they now have a much fuller sound. Where as their last album sounded more like a three piece, this album finds them playing with many more pieces in their quest for awsome. (BTW they succeed in my opinion) The song writing also seems to have been kicked up a notch. It's not so much that the songs from their last album weren't great it's just that these are better. The lyrics are clever, sometimes comical (When Daddy Gets Home, and Chain Gang Bang Bang), and often tell a story. Like bards of old, Neon Horse weave lyric and music together to provide an immensely enjoyable experience for the listener.
Unfortunately for the world there are not more bands that strive for originality like the Horse. If there were the world would be a more interesting place.
