5.0 classic | Ben McGlinn | May 23rd 23 | Still Live After 50 Years Volume 1. which was recorded in Syracuse in 2014 shows that Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown can still put on an excellent live performance. So many other rock and blues musicians from the sixties and seventies have recorded albums with that all too familiar twelve-bar blues formula while Savoy Brown continues to deliver highly intense blues rock with fast rhythms and phenomenal guitar licks. When listening to Kim Simmonds playing guitar, you will hear that he has the talent and playing ability that would rival Stevie Ray Vaughn. With this said, his voice is also outstanding and he has the perfect tone for this British blues combo. Like lots of their other live albums, Savoy Brown performs some of their classic songs with more energy and better sound than the original recordings. Bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm round out the rhythm section that completes the driving force of this band. Songs like Goin’ to the Delta, Laura Lee, and Tell Mama are fine examples of how this band rocks. Hard Way To Go is one of the best rocking acoustic blues songs that you could ever hear. This album was so fantastic that they released a second volume from the same show that is equally as great as this one. After hearing these albums, you will see that Kim Simmonds was such an underrated guitarist compared to some of the other legends that are constantly being praised.
