Review Summary: I listened to this album and it told me it was good.
Ian B.’s one-man project is called Aerials. One thing’s for sure: Ian has mastered the art of making beats. In the first two tracks in this EP, he indeed shows his beat making capabilities. The beats on offer in the first two tracks involve generic rock. They are the kind of beats you might hear during an ad, advertising popcorn in a theatre. There’s a wee bit of bounce, though certainly no nuance in the opening tracks. I love movies though, so for the first two tracks Ian receives one pat on the back for his efforts. More could surely be done to beef up the tracks, but I will not poop upon decent tracks. They could also be decent theme songs for sappy tv shows, how nifty.
The next two tracks (the final tracks) go in a different direction — metal. Very exciting, I love metal. Indeed, Castlevania C64 is the third track and it is generic metal. One spunky riff plays throughout the track as if to say, “That’s all you get, deal with it”. However, I do love metal, and therefore I am genetically/generically pleased. Nothing is wrong, everything is okay, good job Ian — high five!
The last track is my favourite track because it is the best track. Rather than one repeated riff, there are many riffs that are not repeated. These riffs are catchy and metal, and dare I say nuanced? The track is called 4 dead flies but their is much buzz to be had that will swat your tushy, making you the dead fly. The man himself said he was inspired by his “warped kid tour energy”, and I would like more of that energy please! The track, in short, gives off an August Burns Pastel Pink vibe. Whatever that means, you’ll have to find out on your own.
And there you have it, a good album. Much better than the last album, which was a pile of dung. This one is not. It is a pile of FUN. Good job Ian — bring it in, it’s hug time.
