Review Summary: Joy to the world, the sweaty rave has come?
EDM may not be the first genre that comes to mind when discussing Christmas music. Xmas has largely been - almost inarguably - dominated by commercial pop and soft ballads. I won’t dig too deep into the pros and cons of getting the same type of music every year, but few risks are taken. Rather than sticking to the age old formula, Home Alone (On the Night Before Christmas), is a tribute to EDM artists, featuring a turkey dinner of them. There’s absolutely no adhering to the norm, tracks are cheekily brackish, and loud. And you know what else? It’s incredible.
This album explores the vocal, poppy side of EDM, and also brazen bangers complete with
ho-ho-ho. Not only does it work, but it’s absurdly fun, and matches the festive joy of Christmas time. EDM is surprisingly perfect for Christmas music, the repetition of the genre’s melodic patterns and predictable beats is perfect for a song like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Not every song is as memorable as the last, but the merry and bright tunes carry you through the album.
I appreciate the variety most of all. Tons of creative license is used, beefing up tracks far beyond necessary. Think of it as a remix album and you’re golden, but put aside your expectations. It may take a second to settle in to this album for those used to traditional Christmases, and it’s worth it. At the very least it’s a corny novelty with a couple songs that’ll cheer you up just in time for Christmas.
