Hypomania is a lot of things. JJ Allin’s maybe debut album comprises many sounds. At times, it grunts the way a sweaty 60-year old man grunts. Most of the time, however, it zooms the way a zoomer zooms. JJ Allin may have vocal talent. The artist definitely has lyrical talent. Something by the name of panter produced every beat on this record. The beats mostly beat, and occasionally don’t. Yesterday was edge day and I doubt JJ Allin celebrated this particular day. That doesn’t mean that JJ Allin can’t get political. Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Raegan and Karl Marx are all part of Hypomania’s world. The artist even states that he is not romantically interested in children, something that cannot be said of many pop punk vocalists. One could say that words fail and ratings fail but neither do. Words work and ratings work. JJ Allin uses one of those things (words) and complements it with sound (music). Hypomania is something that exists and can be listened to. Don’t call me.
