Review Summary: As one of the most successful artists of the decade, is it any wonder this compilation is so good?

This is Britney's second greatest hits, and it's incredibly strong. It focuses mainly on her mroe upbeat, danceable numbers, with a few slower ones thrown in to change things up without disrupting the constant stream of quality pop songs.

New song "3" is very of the moment - an electro tinged pop-dance song, with a sickly sweet hook that taps right into the Gaga/Ke$ha/3OH!3 aesthetic being mined in the pop landscape at the moment to great effect. Breakthrough hit "...Baby One More Time" is almost a world away, but the teen-girl confessional still strays the right side of good compared to comparable artists today. You've all heard it before, and yes it is slightly played out now but it's a defining single of its era for sure.

Slightly more up-tempo songs such as "Stronger" showcase the side of Britney that could give us fun, sing-along hits that didn't sound as cliche or young as the aforementioned debut single or subsequent track "(You Drive Me) Crazy". The album does include ballads, but aside from the self-penned "Everytime" which is genuinely a quality, soft piano based ballad, the other two slower songs, "Born to Make You Happy" and"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" aren't really strong enough, and will likely warrant use of the "skip" button, although to their credit they do make the inclusion of "Everytime" feel less out of place.

"Slave 4 U" signifies a shift in Britney's sound, from more wholesome teen pop to the sexier, more electronic influenced sound she owns now - although the track achieves this more through spirit than sound - the track itself undeniably a Neptunes one - the mid-tempo number seeing Britney take on an overall more overtly sexy persona.

"Toxic" is one of her best songs, the swooping strings and bubbling drum beat creating a less-abrasive but no less danceable take on her electro-pop sound. Post-breakdown trio "Gimme More", "Piece of Me" and "Womanizer" from the most recent album Circus confirm that the pop world is all the better having Britney back, her sound and style coming to the logical conclusion started on "Slave 4 U", and ultimately justifying this release as the superior of her two greatest hits compilations by moving the focus onto her most appealing sound. As one of the most successful artists of the decade, is it any wonder this compilation is so good?

Not a very good review imo you misspelled "more" in the first paragraph.

yeah, it's very good considering it's like all of her good songs. it would be like me going and rating Opeth as 1 despite the fact that I don't like that kind of music to begin with anyway.

Anyone that's given this a 1 is officially a moron.

Giving this a 1 is as absurd as giving it a 5

^ True for the most part. Her ballads are a guilty pleasure of mine.

why is it absurd to give it a 5? If you took the best songs of a lot of artists like Britney and put them all on one CD and you'll likely get a 5 worthy album - and Britney's probably one of the best in her field so I don't see how the rating is absurd?

Well, the part of "best in her field" is a little farfetched, considering she didn't have the pipes of Christina Aguilera, or the melodic voice of Justin Timberlake, nor she was a songwriter like Lady Gaga, and her songs didn't have the strong hooks of the Spice Girls. In fact, as a singer she was horribly average. I'd be lying if I said I never dug her albums when I was in middle school, through.

Well if you want to break music down into categories like that then fine, but it's pretty redundant. Christina and Justin couldn't fill a CD like this as well as Britney can, and although I'm a big Gaga fan she's only just starting although I'd be lying if I said I don't think she will (and hope) she surpasses Britney in terms of massive hits, but at the moment she hasn't either. I'm not telling you to like Britney but to deny she's not in the top echelons of that league is a bit unfair.

cool review man, but you don't really justify the 5?

oh, which i've just seen you've changed on your ratings, are you gonna keep the 5 for the review?

i'm undecided atm i mean it's really really good but there's a whole two maybe three tracks i don't like but it's kinda petty to deny it a 5 on that basis? also the fact that giving a compilation a "classic" accolade is kind of awkward but i really feel it is more 5 than 4.5, maybe like 4.75 or something. i dunno what to do :s

i guess it's entirely subjective - in my opinion, those 'two maybe three tracks' would definitely drag it down, for me a classic would have little to no bad elements.

but whatever you think it deserves man!

The greatest hits of a 3.5 at the most artist on one CD, does not make it a 5.
