I mean I guess it's kind of like sex cuz it starts out pretty cool and then it gains momentum and gets pretty intense but then there's a couple of places where you get tired and want to switch positions and get a cramp or two so it kind of almost derails it but not quite and then there's some kind of crazy explosion of awesome at the end and then you need a sandwich or a nap.

If you love BTBAM you will love this. If you don't this will do nothing to change your opinion on them.

:edit: This album is causing me to procrastinate from my Music Theory homework...I will expand on my two sentence
soundoff and make a very long blurb.

The Great Misdirect is definitely not as cohesive as Colors was. However, as with each album, each member of the
band has brought their level of playing to even more impressive heights. Here, their progressive influences really
begin to take place, while omitting some of the ridiculous genre changes. Mirrors, the first song on the album,
begins quietly with clean guitars and almost robotic vocals before transforming into a mesmerizing jazz-influenced
jam-session. Obfuscation is probably the song that would fit in most on Colors, and yet, it manages to feel entirely
fresh while surpassing most of the material on Colors. Disease, Injury, Madness is a very interesting tune which
quiets down at the beginning before exploding into a very groovy jam with a bluesy-metallic feel. Fossil Genera
is possibly the strangest tune BTBAM have ever composed, with a good portion of the first half of the song alluding
to the opening honky-tonk piano line. The last few minutes have a somewhat doomy feel with symphonic elements
added in by the keys. Almost reminds be of "Transcending Bizarre?" at points. Desert of song is a break from the
insanity with a relaxing, 5 minute tune which basically serves as an intro to the 18 minute mammoth that is "Swim to
the Moon." Oh man what a song. There's too much to cover in detail but the second half of the song consists of a
very long instrumental jam. This section is very similar in style to a Dream Theater jam but don't let that turn you
off, it's less of a shredfest than it is a tasteful show of talent. While The Great Misdirect ends on a less epic note than
it should have, in the end this is exactly what a BTBAM fan would want.

P.S. Look out for the drum solo in Swim to the Moon. Fucking ridiculous.

So what do I have to do to get you to bump this? Should I post a stupid meme? Should I post copypasta? Or should I just say this: The Great Misdirect is most likely the album of the year. If you trust anyone on this site, you should trust me. Have I ever steered you wrong before? Seriously, no matter what foxxy says and channing freeman will inevitably say, this is worth the 5 hours or so of hype it's had.
Ok enough of the blatant copy and paste and no foxxy your not a retard i just couldnt resist the urge of soundoff! This album proves to me that Btbam never fail to surprise you or come up with new ideas, i never thought id say this but this tops colors in pretty much every single way. Whilst Informal Gluttony and Decade of Statues pale in quality to WW and ants of the sky, every track on here is simply amazing. It might be just the Btbam fan boy in me (there i said it!) but this simply destroys the rest of the albums this year. Feel free to disagree with me

People have been saying that if you love BTBAM, you will love this, but if you don't, this album won't do a damn thing to change your opinion of them.

I respectfully disagree.

Highly polished and extremely ambitious, The Great Misdirect has much of what you would expect from BTBAM. Their signature heavy metal wankery - the blistering drums, frenzying guitar riffs, and Tommy's impressive vocals... I don't need to tell you what BTBAM sounds like when they turn the agression knob to 11. It's the BTBAM we all know, and it's what they do. Well, for a couple songs, that is.

Between the Buried and Me have expanded their song formula from their black and white genre shifts to a more fluid, coherent style. BTBAM were never known for their song coherence, and this doesn't change much. But the progressions through their songs involve less steep changes in formula, and more traversable advances in style. This makes The Great Misdirect BTBAM's most progressive album to date.

Death metal purists, fear not. Between The Buried And Me are as awesome as ever. Our favorite North Carolina axemen shred to death on this album, but also provide more of a sense of style to their songs rather than pure rigid metal. Fans who may have not been able to stomach BTBAM's older work may find themselves being reborn into the band with this release, and old fans do not have to worry about any significant changes, because BTBAM don't sacrifice their songwriting for accessibility.

And Swim to the Moon owns your face. Buy this album.

Am I listening to the same album as everyone else? I listened to the entire album on repeat over and over again at work, and time after time the only tracks that stood out to me were "Desert of Song" and "Mirrors". The latter track gets originality points to me because it has a very Nancy Sinatra on acid vibe to it.
The rest of the album is a snooze fest. Maybe it's my recent inability to get into heavy music. Maybe it's the fact that every song follows the same relative formula of being short, spastic, and intentionally painful on the ears.
As for being better than Colors, Colors was overrated to begin with, hardly deserving of the classic status it's been crowned. So I'd put this roughly on par with that album. Average. Painfully average.
Everyone, get off of Between the Buried and Me's nuts. They are little more than disorganized noise with occasional moments of glory hidden amongst the mess.
Just kidding. Albums OWNS.

BTBAM is a band that is hard to appreciate if the genre is not your cup of tea. There is a great amount of substance to their songs, you just need to know where to look. Some songs have parts that can be unnecessary which will either be annoying or tedious depending on the listener. Even if this occurs, it is rare that this band uses recycled riffs and stale breakdowns, or whatever a good amount of today's metal bands will do. The fact that BTBAM is trying to expand possiblities for the genre is honorable by itself. Overall, this band does not seem to disappoint while experimenting with their sound. Excellent album for the genre.

A pretty good CD for an incredible band. BTBAM changes it up every album and for this one they just went straight up as prog. as possible. While some progressions and transitions are excellent, fans of older BTBAM (self titled and silent circus are my fav CDs) might not find it as accessable. I do not fault the band for this they wrote an amazing CD, just not the direction I would have liked to have seen it. While most of colors obscure genres were tolerable, things like the intro to FOssil Genera are just flat out stupid. Obfuscation easily the best song on this CD.

This record is a lot more experimental than Colors. This album lunges even further away from the hardcore metal sound of their past and into more progressive rock territory. One thing that is also very prominent is that there are a lot more keys in this reocrd opposed to any BTBAM offerings in the past. There is even a keyboard solo on Swim To The Moon (As well as a sick drum solo)
This album (In My Opinion) is nowhere near as good as Colors but my views might change. You have to keep in mind this is an album that is very technical and only has 6 songs.
Breakdown:
I think the softer songs: "Mirrors", and "Desert Of Song"
are the strongest songs the album has to offer.
I though the Fossil Genera: "A Feed From Cloud Mountain" was the best heavier song. If you have only heard Obsuffication don't judge the album as a whole off of that one song. I think it is the weakest song on the record.

the great misdirect follows the same structure of Colors, and epic cd with a few but lengthy songs.
it is more polished i think, and more cohesive as a whole. there is less disjointedness between riffs, which unfortuneatly was present in colors. this album also took a much jazzier route.
