Review Summary: small stories / big heart

Earth Dog Year transforms brief stories from an ordinary life into extraordinary folk songs that feel as intimate as they are universal. Its country-tinged melodies are crisp yet rarely overbearing, accentuated by pristine vocal harmonies that continuously and impressively match the atmosphere. Moreover, the entirety of Jenna and The Janes seem to be locked into this atmosphere: when stories take place in autumn, guitars lightly twinkle with enough breathing room to feel any passing breeze. When vocalist Jenna Smith effortlessly finds beauty in mundane, everyday acts, each instrument lingers long enough to make one reconsider the very fabric of such familiar banalities. While there are plenty of catchy moment to keep you coming back, the record does not sacrifice any depth for this sense of memorability. Every element connects to every sentiment: from the subtle intensities during the album’s more escapist tendencies to the dynamically ethereal qualities of the many lingering rhythms. Earth Dog Year manages to keep unfolding with each listen, while remaining firmly rooted in anxieties, house parties, news reports, and road trips.

This is wonderful. It reminds me so much of the an EP from The Altogether that was released in 2018 called When We Were Young, one of my all time favorite EPs. The woman singer left the band after that EP and I’ve been hoping to find something similar since. This is perfectly filling that void. Thank you for the review!

Gotta give a couple more spins before giving the rating, but it will def be high

I have subscribed to your tiktok

"There’s plenty of catchy moments on the record to keep you coming back, with a surprising amount of depth to be found in each corner of the record" this line feels a little off with the repetition of 'record', and the first half the the sentence doesn't feel connected to the second half if you get me? Stupidly cute lil neat rev here otherwise, my kind of length

Ok may have been overly excited about this cause it does slow down a teeny bit in the middle section, but still hopping on that 4.2 train. Those harmonies popping in in the opening track get me every time
