God this band rules. album could be longer but whatevs. that 2.5 rating bringing this down is
incorrect and should be removed from existence. Also, what a unique fucking band. So heavy,
minimal, dissonant and melodic at the same time.

While a casual listener might see Piecework as more of the same from KWC, the band have tightened
up their sound over the 6 years this album spent in gestation. The fuzz and the rattling of prior
albums, more of a carry-over from noise rock and sludge, has been minimised. Piecework is almost
disturbingly precise, harking back to Fugazi's Repeater more than, say, Sleep's Holy Mountain,
like their earlier work did. As a result, it exhibits refined and gorgeous tones that truly stand
out from the crowd, but retain the emotional and sonic heft that made the band so good in the
first place.

Fans hoping for a more maximalist listening experience may not find as much enjoyment here between the short runtime and Kowloon's stark aesthetic. That being said, if you enjoy a good slow-burn the band has put out their best release to date. It's a sonic treat in its clarity and their most methodically written and executed record.

Kowloon Walled City are back with another devastating serving of sludge and post metal that fizzles out too quickly, but mostly leaves a good aftertaste and a healthy thirst for more. I just hope it doesn't take them 6 further years to deliver.
