Review Summary: ‘Hats’ off

Everyone knows the saying ‘life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans’ but for me I’ve added a new one to that; ‘music taste is what happens while you plan what to listen to next’. Without me consciously choosing it ‘sophisti-pop’ has slowly but surely become the bedrock of my listening, and because it’s not a genre that’s stuffed with loads of championed bands or recognised classic albums I’ve not really acknowledged this fact until now. I never ‘binged’ sophisti-pop, it’s more a case of me being obsessed with one of these albums at a time, but that still only adds up to say fifteen albums over as many years, perhaps reaching as far back as Destroyer’s unique take on the style ‘Kaputt’ from 2011.

In fact I’ve been quite resistant to a lot of additional sophisti bands/albums whenever I’ve consciously branched out from whichever was my established favourite at the time; a case in point are It’s Immaterial who I investigated after immersing myself in the world of The Blue Nile’s ‘Hats’. The similarities between the styles of the two bands was clear as day and yet their material didn’t resonate; perhaps they were too similar, there wasn’t really an opening for what they were offering.

As is often the case, even bands I dismiss will stick a ‘for another time’ post-it note in my brain and after noticing It’s Immaterial had a very very late third inclusion in their catalogue released in 2020 I felt a twinge of intrigue (this is in some ways a ‘mostly dead’ genre after all). A little sleuthing later and as expected the long gestation (shelved since 1993 no less) was down to a series of misfortunes but despite it all something drew the artists back to completing this work; after listening to ‘House for Sale’ you’d have to conclude it was the strength of the songs.

The immediate comparison was with ‘Hats’, not too surprising considering it was recorded at a similar time and at the same studio, but this was no copycat. Compared to that Blue Nile album the atmosphere here is less resolutely urban and nocturnal. There’s a brightness, or even glamour in places, that reminds me more of Perry Blake’s ‘California’ love letter; similar to that album, the best of the songs here are truly evocative. ‘Downriver’ drifts and glides like it’s travelling on warm air currents; ‘Up On the Roof’ is a piano led revery of a ballad with that hint of pathos that’s very Paul Buchanan; and best of all is ‘I Can’t Sleep’ that’s packed full of subtle moody textures of varying origins.

An unlikely late career 24 carat gold plated success that’s proving tough to critique (ok, the second song is maybe a bit too perky?), this album has seen Its Immaterial finally join my sophisti cartel of The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, The Bathers and The Apartments (among others). Makes you wonder how many potential abandoned classic albums there are out there…

After about six months of no new 5 ratings I’ve found three over the last few weeks, so happy days.

This album isn’t on streaming which is a crime but I do sort of get that choice after reading about the making of this album.

So if you want to listen you might have to buy a copy :-(

But that would be great to support them anyway, the band surely deserve it for the effort of finally getting this out there

PumpBoffBag - as far as I know near impossible to stream (might be on Soulseek, I don't know) but if you do want to buy a copy this is the site I used:

https://burningshed.com/store/itsimmaterial

they have download, vinyl or CD.

I mean getting this released required crowd funding and then Covid hit to delay it further, and that's after the initial recordings were abandoned following a close family member cancer death.

That it got released and is so perfectly made after all that time, I was pleased I gave the band some cash tbh.

Cheers for the info- I certainly don’t mind giving money to worthwhile projects. Based on the review, this is definitely worthwhile

I hope you dig this Drifter

Be wary of checking their debut which is streaming, that’s a different style(s).

Some tracks for the second album ‘Song’ are on YouTube and they’re more representative - I genuinely think this new one is a shade better than ‘Song’ though.

Nice one Doof. Sophisti-pop is one of those genres I’m sure I’d fall for if I dug more into it but I’m very much a novice - is this worth prioritizing ahead of other more “essentials” of the genre (I’ve heard no Prefab Sprout, for instance)?

Boney, the issue here is actually finding a way to listen to this as it isn't streaming.

The best way to start would probably be The Blue Nile ('Hats' then head outwards from that) and Prefab Sprout ('Steve McQueen' and head outwards from that).

Those two bands definitely dominate this genre...if it is even a genre ;)

Definitely had a big influence on 'Kaputt' etc - I think it's a genre with an overlap in terms of appeal with chamber pop and similar. It wouldn't take too much imagination to imagine an album like 'Is a Woman' and definitely some of the later Tindersticks albums to be recorded as sophisti-pop for example. I'd say some Tindersticks material might well be best classed as sophisti-pop.

Hats I do know but no other Blue Nile so guess I should prob start there. I definitely like plenty of adjacent stuff but mostly more modern rather than “classic” stuff.

For the longest time I thought 'Hats' was by far and away the best thing The Blue Nile put out but now I like all four albums and the Buchanan solo. 'Peace at Last' will be a lot harder to get into I think, some of it will initially put you off I imagine, as was similar for me - but then the emotion connected, it isn't as smooth as 'Hats' and that is off putting at first. Even though it isn't an '80s album it might feel more '80s :/

Perry Blake is another interesting one who straddles art rock/pop, chamber pop, sophisti-pop, etc

I think that ‘80s sheen on a lot of the sophisti-pop stuff might be what’s put me off it a bit - but I’ve come around to more stuff with that sound over time. With something like sophisti-pop it’s really just a question of whether it transcends the potential for cheese.

wouldn't boney prefer peace at last though due to its acoustic nature?

Maybe some of it will have an initial appeal for that but overall I think it’ll be a tougher sell at first.

I’d almost recommend ‘High’ before it for Boney as that album is smooth and more contemporary sounding.

‘Peace at Last’ is the better album of the two so still clinches it.

High took the longest for me but PAL definitely had to grow but paid off immensely for both.

The spoken word sprinkled throughout some of these songs irks me quite a bit. I really enjoy a lot of the music on here, but that holds me back from enjoying the album completely after an initial listen.

Cris - it’s sort of their unique thing within the genre, often the verse is mostly spoken word but the chorus is sung.

They’ve had that feature even since the debut (other than that the debut is quite a lot different to this style)

I like the spoken word on most songs, generally the second song I find a bit too much, including the spoken word. That’s the only slight weak spot for me.
