3.5 great | Bedex | January 12th 23 | As expected this is beautifully executed but not too spicy jazz. McCoy do be a god, and when he goes a little free roaming the tracks become fabulous. Favourites were especially the dancier 3, and then 4,8 and 10, which are all characterized by slightly spicier offering. The much calmer and contemplative 9 was also marking. Finally, it might be stating the obvious but I think that I would have enjoyed this record more had I been more familiar with Duke Ellington's discography, for some of the enjoyment comes from recognising the tunes and seeing where Tyner takes them - which I realised from the delightfully familiar 2. 3.7
