| 4.5 superb | Fiddy; local potato, atonality advocate, and salsa enthusiast | August 4th 20 | Hartmann is a German composer that has unfortunately been forgotten over time. This compilation contains three of his pieces: Concerto Funebre, Symphony No. 4, and Chamber Concerto (in that order). The first is equal parts brooding, heavy, melodic, and meditative. It builds upon the Romantic tradition with some modern elements, but its foundation is Romantic through-and-through. Symphony No. 4 is somewhat like the Concerto Funebre, but less virtuosic and more pensive. Finally, the Chamber Concerto is another excellent exploration of dissonance, melodicism, and heaviness but in a more playful/individualistic setting. The quality of the recordings and compositions is superb.
