| 3.6 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | July 30th 20 | The soundtrack of the eponymous movie starts with a marking symbol: KRS-One kicks it up with "The French Connection", and all other rappers continue down the same road of hard-hitting conscious rap whose sole goal is to kick you in the nuts. As you can understand with KRS' presence, the mood is clearly NYC-style, made of dark beats reminiscent of Mobb Deep's The Infamous. As a compilation, it's evident not all tracks are material to write home about, but some tunes, like KRS-One's opening salve, Passi's "Les Flammes du mal" or Assassin's classic "Retour aux Pyramides" are absolute bangers. Fortunately, the worst tracks are not that bad, making this hour-long compilation a great way to understand the mid/late 90s French rap scene.
