Review Summary: Consistent, understated excellence.

Modern Nature very quietly stepped into the indie-rock scene in 2019 with their Nature EP and their debut full-length How To Live. Featuring a lo-fi sound that alternates between timid verses bursting with jazzy brass and smooth, gliding choruses, the band seems to have figured out a very palatable aesthetic early on. The group’s sophomore “mini album”, Annual, further refines their formula without altering the solid base upon which their sound is built. The result is a breezy twenty minutes that flows with an air of classical elegance.

Those who appreciated How To Live will immediately recognize the similarities here: the hushed Nick Drake-ish vocals, the freeform rhythms, and rattling guitars. After a brief guitar interlude, ‘Flourish’ encompasses all of these traits with an especially prominent saxophone, lending the song a thick and textured sound while Jack Cooper’s breathy verses cover it all in a fog. ‘Halo’ is another song that makes heavy use of the saxophone, as it swells and explodes through the gaps left by the song’s earthy, bare-bones structure. Most of the songs on this seven track LP are built around tatty, meandering drums that allow the vocals and brass to, in effect, determine which direction the wind blows each song. It’s all very classy and chilled-out – almost a lounge vibe that alternates between smoky timbres and crystalline beauty.

Closer ‘Wynter’ is the nearest Annual comes to really getting its feet off the floor, with wispy, poignant verses that are somewhat reminiscent of album highlight ‘Criminals’ (from 2019’s How To Live), although it floats rather than hitting the runway and taking flight. That’s a pretty apt analogy for Annual as a whole – it’s percussively and acoustically grounded, but its vocals and various instrumental accents allow it to drift across the soundscape like a fine, misty rain. It doesn’t quite ascend to the beauteous peaks of its immediate predecessor, but it’s just as steady and unwavering – hovering above, around, and through the atmosphere to become one with our surroundings. With Annual, Modern Nature prove that consistent, understated excellence comes naturally to them.

An appropriately brief review for this 20 minute so-called "mini album." This band is pretty great and you should give them a shot if it sounds like your kind of thing.

I like it, very Talk Talk 'Laughing Stock' - the album art seems like a nod to Talk Talk too

But of course the album I'm enjoying this morning already has a Sowing review. How predictable.

You soon won't have to worry about that anymore! (But I'm glad you're enjoying this!)

There will be all sorts of indie albums that go unnoticed that is for sure. I'm probably good for 2 more reviews this year but that's like a day's worth of productivity for you.

it's definitely worth checking. a lot of it is just low key, jazzy free form kind of stuff - but Flourish and Wynter are worth coming back to repeatedly, and the album on the whole doesn't falter at any point

I found this very forgettable on first listen, but subsequent listens have made me really appreciate this album. I definitely hear plenty of Talk Talk influence on the sound, the other comparable thing I'm reminded of is The Antlers, Familiars era.

Great stuff!

Instrumentally really interesting!

The vocal delivery is a little muted for my taste, but I tend to prefer over-the-top vocals than the opposite anyways.

Agreed w/ winsom, wish the vox were more dynamic. The rest is cool though.

yeah the vocals might be the weakest point, although they fit the style of music

Pots you got some issues my man. Following me around trying to provoke me because of my comment on the Sawayama review where I said your ratings were disingenuous. You have comments on other reviews where you literally say you rate things to get reactions from people... so I was 100% right. Since then you’ve been pissy while I’ve just been bantering with you, and then the other day you lost your shit and called me a bunch of names on the RTJ review for no reason at all. I never did anything to you, stop playing the victim. You’re just trying to let off steam on strangers on the internet. Not even trying to talk shit when I say this, but get a life.

Yeah it definitely suits the music, but I do wish it was a little more vibrant from time to time.

Agreed, it can be boring if you're not in the mood for understated, lounge style jazzy indie-pop
